Xiaomi MIX 4 review – no frame, no front
The previous Xiaomi Mi MIX 3 was launched three years ago, presumably before our era. The front of the device featured a truly frameless display, with no bumps, visors, islands. The smartphone consisted of two parts, one of which (with a front) shot upwards. According to the 2018 version, the slider was strange because the screen should move upwards logically. And on Mi MIX 3, it suddenly fell, awkward and unusual.
In 2019, the Mi MIX Alpha concept background was shown with a screen for the entire smartphone area. The smartphone was supposed to go on sale, but it didn’t work out.
The new version is accurate to tradition: the screen still has no bezels, and it was decided to hide the front camera directly under the screen, covering it with pixels. Sounds good; it looks the same. However, there are doubts about the quality of the photo.
Frontalka in incognito mode
The 20 MP module was placed under the screen. Unlike similar solutions (ZTE Axon 20 5G and Samsung Galaxy Z Fold3 also 5G), the front of the «mix» can be found only on a white background and how to look closely. The system sometimes illuminates the module so that you know where to look. If some application secretly decides to lift the user (Instagram, for example), the system immediately draws a sun in front. Convenient feature.
This is all great if it weren’t for the quality of the selfie, which is out of the question. Instagram users thought I didn’t clean the camera. However, she always shoots like this. And if during the day, in the sun, the quality is quite acceptable, then in the room about the selfie should be forgotten. Hello since 2012!
Juicy screen
To the exhibition of questions more minor. AMOLED, 1 billion colors, a stylish 120 Hz FHD + resolution, HDR10 + support, Dolby Vision, and most importantly, the narrowest frame possible. The content on the screen seems fiery.
However, the bottom is still slightly wider than the rest of the frame. Android devices can’t get rid of the chin completely. But the oleophobic coating is beyond praise – it’s two heads better than the same iPhone 13.
If anything, the Gorilla Glass Victus windshield is rounded on the sides. A few years ago, everyone realized that it was inconvenient, often accidental clicks and more. However, China still believes otherwise. Beautiful and well.
Striped “Dragon”
The Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 processor is the underbelly of most of this year’s flagship products. The chipset speeds up, restores performance, drains the battery charge with a spoon, and of course, gets hot. However, Xiaomi did not embarrass anyone, so the MIX 4 loaded version of the «stones» – 888 Plus. The performance score of the ARM Cortex-X1 was overclocked from 2.84 GHz to 3 GHz. Well, why not! After all, the processor is not a problem!
In the stress test, the smartphone loses performance by up to 55%, the worst result in recent years for any chipset. However, this does not affect games. The chipset is still nowhere because even half its capacity is enough to run the best projects in the «ultra.» Neither PUBG Mobile nor Genshin Impact has any problems.
Everything in the system is smooth and sweet. The smartphone is incredibly fast: animation flies, programs open immediately, the screen offers 120 Hz. The main brake in this whole connection is the user.
Camera three: no longer needed
Surprisingly, Xiaomi engineers forgot about the macro camera, and even the wide-angle module does not have autofocus. The intelligence of the product overlooked that Apple was going to equip its iPhone 13 Pro with a super macro feature. Well, there is nothing you can do. However, the primary cameras of the Xiaomi MIX 4 are never embarrassed.
During the day, the three modules solve any diagram without unnecessary questions. But at night, the nuances emerge. Optostab does not work well enough (in night mode, photos often get blurry). For each firefighter, we take 3-4 photos at a time. The periodic wide-angle camera “pleases” the soap at the edges of the frame. However, all of this is true when you study the photo on the computer screen. On a smartphone, images burn with fire, quality, and excellent sharpness even with such a screen.
Ceramic body
There are three colors in wildlife: black, white, and gray. Everything is beautiful in its way and, most importantly, ceramics. This is a good tradition from the first-generation MIX series.
Weight 225 grams – a normal phenomenon by modern standards. However, with such a slippery body, using Xiaomi MIX 4 without a cover is very dangerous. In any case, there is no place to repair a broken screen or issue. Therefore, I do not recommend checking which is stronger: ceramic on a smartphone or the floor.
Dynamic, in any case, two: one at the bottom, the main one, multimedia, the other at the top. The tandem creates a stereo pair and produces excellent sound quality. In this regard, it is even better than the iPhone 12 Pro Max: better and louder.
Battery
The smartphone is compelling, and the screen is excellent; this is all bad news for autonomy, especially for a 4,500-stroke battery, which is enough for a day of regular use or 4 hours of screen operation, almost a ceiling for a smartphone. Of course, you can optimize power consumption, turn off 120 Hz, “blur” all utilities and thus increase autonomy. However, why buy a flagship and deprive yourself of most of its jokes?
The box has a 120 W power supply. It is compact; you can take it with you and even carry a laptop; the adapter is more potent than most “laptop” chargers. So the smartphone charges quickly, although not as cleverly as Xiaomi reports.
